The Sigma Awards is once again eager to celebrate the best of data journalism around the world. We are now accepting submissions of data projects published in 2024.
“The Sigma Awards and GIJN are the perfect match, especially since GIJN and its member organizations are constantly adopting and promoting the best practices in this field." — GIJN Board Chair Brant Houston
As with previous editions, the award will maintain its no-category rule and will have experts in data journalism from around the world constituting its jury and prize committee.
This launch comes with additional news: GIJN will be the new host of the Sigma Awards.
"I'm incredibly excited that the Global Investigative Journalism Network is the new home for the Sigma Awards. When Aron and I founded the Sigmas, we were aiming to go beyond just recognizing great work and help bring together the global data journalism community; I can't think of a better organization to continue that vision," said Gina Chua, co-founder of the Sigma Awards and executive editor at Semafor.
Brant Houston, chair of the GIJN board of directors, emphasized the relevance of the award: "We are extremely honored to become the home of the Sigma Awards, which is the premier contest recognizing the highest quality data-driven journalism and innovative techniques around the world.” Houston added: “The Sigma Awards and GIJN are the perfect match, especially since GIJN and its member organizations are constantly adopting and promoting the best practices in this field."
This year marks the fifth edition of the Sigma Awards, a recognition created to empower the global community of data journalists. The competition aims to bring together the community and support those working with data.
The 2024 edition received 591 entries from 322 organizations in 78 countries, and six regions.
“Gina and I are beyond thrilled the Sigmas has found a home with the Global Investigative Journalism Network, whose mission and membership are so aligned with our own. I cannot imagine a better partner,” added Aron Pilhofer, co-founder of the Sigma Awards and chief product officer at the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
“We are excited! The Sigmas will allow us to celebrate the best of global data journalism and continue sharing with the community valuable resources that emerge from the journalism we will award,” said Emilia Díaz-Struck, executive director of GIJN.
“We are immensely grateful to Gina Chua, Aron Pilhofer, Simon Rogers, Marianne Bouchart, and Kuek Ser Kuang Keng, who have been leading the Sigmas, as well as to all the colleagues who have supported the awards as jury and prize committee members, and everyone from the Sigmas community. We will continue working together towards empowering the global data and investigative journalism community.”
