Project description:

National Health Institutes interviewed nearly half a million people in The Netherlands about their health, from chronic illness to smoking and depression. We developed an interactive map, which shows the regional patterns in people’s health and lets the user zoom in on specific neighborhoods to find their own stories.

Impact reached:

Many local news media extracted stories from our map for their own publications.

Techniques/technologies used:

We used R for data analysis and Mapbox, deck.GL and d3.js for the interactive map.

What was the hardest part of this project?

The hardest part was to make the design and performance of the interactive map suitable for both desktop and mobile.

What can others learn from this project?

With an accessible visualization, including well-chosen filters, people will uncover many more stories than you can possibly find on your own.
