2021 | Datajournalism @ De Tijd Beyond Covid

Country/area: Belgium

Organisation: De Tijd

Organisation size: Big

Cover letter:

2021 was the year in which our datateam at De Tijd proved itself as a stronghold within the newsroom of De Tijd. In its current formation, De Tijd’s datateam exists since 2018 consists of 4 people within a larger newsroom of approximatly 100 in total. Historically a purely financial newspaper, the medium broadened it scope in recent years and now covers a wide array of topics while keeping true to it’s quantitative and rational approach.

Although these principles align well with the nature of datajournalism, the task of embedding a datajournalism within the larger newsroom is challenging. We submit our portfolio because we believe that during the past year we were able to let our team grow while further integrating our activities within the newsroom.

While the covid pandemic in 2020 allowed us the prove the importance of data driven journalism to the rest of the newsroom, 2021 was the year in which we were able to reaffirm that position. We broadened our scope beyond covid-related topics and applied some of the quantitative methods we learned during the past years to a wider array of themes. We made it our goal to tackle all of the major news topics and searched for ways to approach these themes with original and innovative entries.
